Dear RainbowUCT

Welcome back! We truly hope you have had an amazing and refreshing vacation! Hopefully you saw Philip when he was here. Translation: the World Cup and the foreigners were amazing– well done South Africa!

We'd also like to give a Rainbow-worthy warm welcome to a whole host of new Semester Study Abroad students from all over the world. We're so glad to have you with us and look forward to the many great times ahead.

We have had an amazing year so far! Last time, on Rainbow....

  • We've had an wonderful series of rich and stimulating Discussion Groups.
  • We dominated the Pride Parade and even incorporated our own Pride Hike into Pride celebrations.
  • Alex Muller’s international “Faces of IGLYO” exhibition was presented at the Centre for African Studies. The Exhibition has since traveled across Europe to the International Gay and Lesbian Archives (IHLIA) in the Netherlands and was showcased during Pride season.
  • Our voices have been heard loud and clear, with our fervent participation in the protest against Ugandan anti-homosexuality bill, as well as CoED’s demonstration outside the Khayelitsha Regional Court to demand justice for Zoliswa Nkonyana. Our involvement was broadcast across local and national news media.
  • And who can forget the parties? From our first big Opening Function, our Inter-varsity Movie Night, and the Fruit Salad Mid-Year function, we have kept tradition alive by hosting THE BEST parties on campus.

Now before you start thinking that the most exciting part of the year is already over, let us assure you – you haven't seen anything yet.

Coming up this season

RainbowUCT is partnering with university management to host the first Campus Pride “Pink Week” this September ― a total campus takeover with special guest speakers, film screenings, presentations from local and national organisations, and discussion groups aimed at raising LGBTI awareness on campus. We’ll also be relaunching our infamous Closet campaign and (of course) topping it off with a huge party. Soon we'll be recruiting for the Pink Police team – the faces of Pink Week – so stay tuned for more information.

We're looking to have another inter-varsity social – and we're interested in something fun! If you have any ideas or things you'd like to do, let us know! This Friday Lesbigay will be participating in the infamous “Soen in Die Laan’ so show some love.

Our Discussion Groups will return next week Wednesday, details to follow. DG’s are the perfect forum to discuss issues we rarely get to talk about in an open, friendly yet informative environment.

We'll be on the lookout for RainbowUCT Committee Recruits for next year, so if you're interested, speak to any one of your committee members to find out more about the various positions available.

And of course there's the NOTORIOUS End-of-Year Party, Out in Africa Film Festival and MCQP to look forward to!

Lastly, just a few reminders

At the end of every month, be sure to pick up your copy of the latest Pink Tongue newspaper on Level 5 of the Steve Biko building (two floors up from the Food Court) near the Closet and opposite the Societies Centre Help Desk. The August edition has just arrived.

Check your mail often, visit our Facebook page and Events page on our website to find out details about upcoming events.

As always, if you have any ideas for Rainbow events, discussion group topics, or anything else, don’t hesitate to contact your committee! Make use of the "Suggestion box" on the Contact Us page of our website, or email uct.rainbow@gmail.com.

We wish you all the best for the upcoming semester!
